Which version should I choose?

Choose ClawStage 1.0 if you want the Raspberry Pi 5 (8 GB) and microSD card included. Choose BYOP if you already have a Raspberry Pi 5 and want to supply your own board and microSD card. The display, sensing, audio and motion hardware are shared.

Do I need development or programming knowledge to use ClawStage?

ClawStage is built on the Raspberry Pi ecosystem, offering developers limitless possibilities for customization and expansion. At the same time, we've kept the setup process as simple as possible for non-technical users. With intuitive natural language interaction, you can control ClawStage just as easily as using ChatGPT — no coding required. Start your desktop AI companion journey right away.

Can ClawStage work offline, or does it need to stay connected to the internet?

ClawStage needs to be connected to the internet to work—either via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Use the ClawStage App to set up the network and pair your device.

Does ClawStage require a subscription to work?

ClawStage works in BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) mode by default. Just configure your own LLM API key and you're good to go. There are no extra fees, and it supports all LLM providers that OpenClaw works with.

The subscription model is an optional value-added service we're planning for users who don't have their own key. It's out-of-the-box mode, not a requirement.

What external devices can be connected to ClawStage?

ClawStage supports both wired and wireless expansion:

Wired:

  • The four USB ports of the Raspberry Pi 5 are exposed, allowing easy connection of standard USB devices.
  • In addition, an 8-pin pogo connector is designed for easy hardware expansion. We plan to open-source both the hardware design and software SDK. Interfaces such as I²C and GPIO are planned to be exposed for custom integration.

Wireless:

With built-in Home Assistant and a Thread Border Router (OTBR), ClawStage can easily connect to smart home devices. Matter-compatible devices can be seamlessly added and managed through Home Assistant.

I see some characters. How can I use them? Can I create my own character?

We offer a wide range of characters for you to use, divided into three main types:

  • Official characters – preset ones like Miko.
  • Community characters – created by other users and ready to use.
  • Your own custom characters – easily build your unique character using the ClawStage Workshop (web platform) with just text descriptions and reference images.
Which ClawStage services are cloud-based versus local?

Cloud services include:

  • AI conversation features (voice service, LLM-based text chat)
  • Character usage and creation (including custom characters and related data)

Local storage (services) include:

  • Your API Key storage(BYOK Mode)
  • Your chat history with AI
  • Long-term conversation memory
  • Device and data managed on the Raspberry Pi (e.g., smart home device information)
  • OpenClaw configuration
How is my data security guaranteed?

Cloud services: We strictly comply with data security and regulatory requirements in all regions where we operate.

Local services: Our design includes the following protections:

  • Sandboxed AI: OpenClaw runs in a restricted environment. It can only execute approved commands and cannot modify core operating system files.
  • Local processing: Your data stays on your device and is not constantly exposed to cloud servers.

Please note that OpenClaw operates only within its designated workspace by default. If it ever needs to access anything outside that workspace, it will explicitly ask for your permission before proceeding.
